I wanted it to sound polished and meaningful — something worthy of StoryCorps. Instead, I learned that the most important moments happen when you stop trying to make it perfect. In trying to create something timeless, I almost missed what was happening right in front of me.

I created Self Told to preserve my mom’s stories before they were lost. What I didn’t expect was discovering how much she wanted to hear ours. During a holiday visit, I found myself sharing more of my own past — and watching her light up as she listened. It changed how I think about storytelling, connection, and even how Self Told should work.

Instead of focusing solely on self-improvement, what if one resolution strengthened the people you love? In A Resolution Worth Keeping, I share my plan to record one story a month for my family — a simple, meaningful habit that preserves memories, deepens connection, and creates a legacy in your own voice. Just a few minutes each month, but a gift that lasts a lifetime.

Thanksgiving often brings the same familiar expressions of gratitude — but beneath them lie deeper stories we rarely say out loud. This blog explores a new tradition: recording a short, meaningful message of what we’re truly thankful for, creating a keepsake that lasts far beyond the holiday.

We often think only the big, obvious memories matter — the milestones, the defining moments, the stories everyone expects. But during months of testing Self Told, the author discovers something surprising: it’s the small, seemingly unremarkable stories that resonate the most. The ones we barely remember telling — and the ones our loved ones have never heard at all.

Every family remembers the same moment a little differently — and that’s where the magic happens. This story explores how one birthday tradition inspired Self Told’s new More to This Story feature, allowing families to record their own versions of shared memories and preserve them as a rich, multi-voice narrative.
